  57. The flat lives of people slowly fade inside jam-packed cities like 
  58. Union, capital of the new nation.

  60. Everything lies in the grip of an eternal paralysis, predicated like 
  61. gospel from Multinational Corporations. Only those who belong to the 
  62. elite have learned about arts and sciences, matter and soul.

  64. States are nothing but flags, soldiers defending a civilisation that 
  65. is not civil anymore. Cyberspace has made his appearance to save the 
  66. citizens from everyday reality. It is a virtual network, generated 
  67. from the fusion of all digital connections of the last millennium.

  69. Many Multinationals see this non-existant space as an ideal resort 
  70. for their business meetings and research communities.
  71. <p>
  72. Cyberspace can offer you anything: leisure, travels, friends you 
  73. never had and dreams you never dreamt. Drugs are its natural, organic 
  74. brainchild.

  76. Recently a company has announced the inauguration of its latest 
  77. "Neural-Navigation System", with a slogan that proclaims "full 
  78. reality in virtual experiences"...
  79. <p>
  80. The last sunrays are gone now, and the warm breeze of a June's night 
  81. somehow weakens the miasma that people here call air.

  83. In the desolation of the Union Industrial Borderland, Joshua Reeve, 
  84. ex-lieutenant of the military services, is silently waiting for the 
  85. arrival of his new client.

  87. He's not here for the money, anyway. It's just that an old debt has 
  88. to be paid back. His wait is interrupted by the landing manoeuvre of 
  89. a luxurious Limousine, the car of his former captain Hugh Martens. 
  90. It is strange, the taste in your mouth when you're going to meet the 
  91. man who saved your life. It's like savouring your own blood.

  95. Joshua gets into the limousine. The door automatically closes after 
  96. him.

  98. "Joshua, it's been a long time..."

  100. "Too long. What's the score?"

  102. "Nowadays Martens is Union City's mayor, but his popularity seems to 
  103. be rapidly going downhill. The reason is directly connected to the 
  104. attacks of a group of terrorists, who have targeted the most 
  105. important industrial installations in the city, included the Genesis 
  106. Cryogenic Enterprise, who is no less that Martens' electoral 
  107. sponsor."

  109. "So, where do I come in?"
  110. <p>
  111. But Joshua already knows why he's sitting in that car. He'll have to 
  112. find those damned rebels. His investigation is going to start from 
  113. the apartment of a guy called Simon Ruby, a police officer 
  114. infiltrated in the terrorist group who has disappeared more than 24 
  115. hours ago.

  117. "Look, we found these things in his car..."

  119. Martens gives him a transparent plastic bag.

  123. Explanation time is over. The limousine lands on the roof of the building 
  124. where Ruby lived.
